Musica Vitae Official Website

Musica Vitae, based in Växjö in the south of Sweden, is one of the country’s best-reputed chamber orchestras and audience and critics alike are full of praise for its fifteen strings. Firmly rooted in the classical string tradition and with a strong commitment to contemporary art music, the orchestra presents a general programme characterised by its range and quality. To date Musica Vitae have given first performances of some 100 commissions by Sweden’s foremost composers as well as by young compositions students at the country’s largest university colleges of music. The collaboration with the university colleges started some ten years ago and has gained wide acknowledgement throughout Sweden’s music life. Throughout the years, the orchestra has collaborated with a number of internationally acclaimed conductors and soloists as well as with young Swedish up-and-coming artists. Striving to expand the boundaries of the chamber ensemble, the orchestra regularly works with artists representing other art forms such as dancers and light designers. They also engage in concerts for children from the age of five and up, and have taken classical music to the streets by performing in busy commercial centres. Musica Vitae travel more than any other Swedish orchestra in their genre. Apart from performing in their home region they tour the entire southern part of Sweden and visit the country’s bigger venues. They have performed throughout Europe as well as in China and the US. On their trip to the States five concerts were given in as many cities, with the final concert taking place at Carnegie Hall in New York. Musica Vitae have attended major international music festivals such as the Swedish Lapland Festival, the Britten Festival at Aldeburgh, the Gulbenkian Festival for Contemporary Music in Lisbon, the Stockholm New Music Festival, Nordic Music Days/Festival of Nordic Contemporary Music and others. Musica Vitae’s discography extends to more than 20 titles. The repertoire is a good example of the orchestra’s programming policy by including baroque, Vienna classical and romantic music as well as contemporary experimental music. Two of their titles have been Swedish Grammy Awards nominees, and a few years ago recordings of music by Nordic composers Rosenberg, Sibelius, Stenhammar and Grieg became favourites of one of Japan’s biggest record dealers. In 1996 they were awarded the music prize Spelmannen (The Fiddler) by one of Sweden’s biggest evening papers. The jury issued the following statement; ‘Sweden’s sharpest strings are to be found in Växjö. With feet buried deep in the soil of the Swedish country side and bows pointing to the wide, wide world, the 15 members of Musica Vitae have in as many years developed into a chamber orchestra of international repute and standard.’
