Megaron Arvo Paert 10-4

The works «My Heart ’s in the Highlands» and «Stabat Mater» are presented with Greek subtitles.

Tribute to Arvo Pärt (b. 1935)…
… covers a time range of almost 40 years including pieces from the so-called “second period” of the composer, when Pärt started to delve into old music and inquire the roots of western music, focusing on gregorian chant and the European polyphony of Renaissance.

The program starts with «Mozart-Adagio» (1992/2005) for violin, cello and piano, performed by Kostas Panagiotidis (violin), Dimitris Travlos (cello) and Christos Sakellaridis (piano). Then, «Spiegel im Spiegel» (1978) will be performed, with Aggela Giannaki (viola) and Christos Sakellaridis (piano). «Summa» follows (1977/1991) for string quartet. Subsequently, countertenor Nikos Spanatis and organist Helen Keventzidou will perform My Heart ’s in the Highlands» (2000/2013). The epilogue of the first part belongs to one of Pärt’s most famous compositions, «Fratres» (1977/1985/1989) which will be performed in the version for string quartet.

In the second part of Tribute to Arvo Pärt «Stabat Mater» will be performed, a piece written in 1985 upon request of the Alban Berg Foundation. With this religious composition, Pärt continues the tradition of western music and hymnography with creations that describe Holy Mary’s pain towards her Crucified Son («Stabat Mater dolorosa» «Mother stands still in pain), a tradition that has appeared from Palestrina’s time and reaches the 20th and 21st century. Vocal parts are being performed by Artemis Bogri (soprano), Nikos Spanatis (counter tenor) and Vassilis Kavagias (tenor). Accompanied by violinist Kostas Panagiotidis, violist Aggela Giannaki  and cellist Dimitris Travlos.
